18: Un Chien Andalou

Luis Bunuel (with a squiggly line above the n) and Salvador Dali's super trippy 15 minute silent film, Un Chien Andalou, came out in 1929 shocking artists alike in Paris. It has no plot, as one would expect from an avant-garde surrealist film, and as such follows a dream-like sequence of moments and experiences. Irrationality and free association pays homage to Frued. We watch the film with no expectations, only with a conceptual mind and an awareness of our frustrations with incoherence. What is beautiful is not found in your relations to the films but instead your perceptions of the artificial associations we make with an already irrational world. To quote Breton, "existence lies elsewhere."

17: Retrospective

25 years ago I was hardly a thought to these people...

Then they got married, had my brother, then me, and now... it's time to celebrate. Thanks mom. Thanks dad. I'm thankful for all that you've done. You guys deserve the best. Happy Anniversary. Love you.

15: I Froze in Passing

...
Serrated winter wind grapples the surface of my river
Like skin, below, my blood flows where its claws cannot touch me
I will not falter to the cold of things
Because I am hot blooded, I persist, I know no end.

12: Jaroslav Seifert

"how the hand with rings is choking them..."

Seifert was a key figure in the Czechoslovakian artistic avant-garde of the early 20th century. In The Monologue of the Handless Soldier, Seifert expresses political protest (relevant to the development of the Communist party) through the personal experiences of a soldier wounded in the Great War, and religious metaphor. Moving, poignant, and lyrical, I chose to share his touching prose to draw from a conceptualized relevance in our current state of affairs.

10: Prefuse 73

Glitch is a modern genre of experimental electronic music with parallels to early manifestations of noise music. Characterized by an interest in sonic artifacts from malfunctioning digital technology, there is a use of unwanted sounds in music production, such as produced by: bugs, crashes, system errors, hardware noises, CD skipping, etc. This highly experimental musical aesthetic lends itself to the many sub-genres of Glitch.

Glitch-hop encompasses the same premises of Glitch except with a foundation in hip-hop. Scott Heren, of Prefuse 73, is a great example of the Glitch-hop style. I also admire his visual creativity. In "Perverted Undertones" we see a montage of film stills, played in both real-time and reverse, and in an array of altering tonal hues. The effect is a minimalist, humorous, and psychedelic ambiance. Werd.

9: Ignacia Lozano: Connected

I stumbled upon this image on the website of Spiral Magazine - a compelling art mag. It's a photograph by artist Ignacio Lozano entitled Connected. Lozano is infamously known in the homosexual art world as an accomplished painter, and more keenly, photographer.

With a fondness of non-artificial photographing (i.e. use of natural lights, out-of-studio settings), Lozano's work has an honest depiction of real life contexts highlighted with blatant homoerotic motifs.

This particular image compelled me primarily due to the interesting use of, Connex, as a medium to clothe the nude figure. Prescribed with the genre of "construction portraits," I draw an allusion to the fusion of sculpture, architecture, and portrait photo. "Connected" serves as an example of a new interesting style, combined with an equally interesting aesthetic of subject matter that I can appreciate. Enjoy!

Nirvana: Dumb

I'm not like them
But I can pretend
The sun is gone
But I have a light
The day is done
But I'm having fun
I think I'm dumb
or maybe just happy
Think I'm just happy

My heart is broke
But I have some glue
help me inhale
And mend it with you
We'll float around
And hang out on clouds
Then we'll come down
And have a hangover

Skin the sun
Fall asleep
Wish away
The soul is cheap
Lesson learned
Wish me luck
Soothe the burn
Wake me up

I'm not like them
But I can pretend
The sun is gone
But I have a light
The day is done
But I'm having fun
I think I'm dumb
or maybe just happy
Think I'm just happy

I think I'm dumb.

4 : charity : water

"WHY WATER.
Right now, 1.1 billion people on the planet don't have access to safe, clean drinking water. That's one in six of us.

WHO WE ARE.
charity: water is a non profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. We give 100% of the money raised to direct project costs, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need. Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years."

-charitywater.org

Now I know I'm no Saint, but I ran across this site and couldn't help but to be compelled by the moving concept this organization stands for. Like many of you reading this, I too have my reasons for losing faith in charities, but charity : water ensures that 100% of donations are given to their partners in actively installing water wells in places that desperately need them.

Highly aware of the society we live in today, I have grown far too frustrated with mankind's excessive crimes of selfishness. I have decided to take the initiative of making every effort in being a more selfless person. If I may come off as being obnoxious, I'm sorry but I can't say that I give a shit. This planet is my home as well and I intend on doing my best to make sure it doesn't turn to shit.

Just 20$ can help a person in Africa get drinking water for 20 years. Amazing! Make a donation today. Save a life. Save the world. Save yourself.
